Cemeteries & Headstones at Icelandic Roots Database

Updated: Apr 26, 2021

The Icelandic Roots Database has many amazing features. Two of them, Cemeteries and Headstones, are interconnected with People and Places in the database.

Below is a screen shot of the landing page on our member database. On the left side of the page is a red highlighted rectangle. Inside this area you can Search for People, Surnames, Photos, Media, Cemeteries, Headstones, Places, and much more. This article will show a few of the powerful features associated with the Cemeteries & Headstones, highlighted below with the two blue arrows.

Below is a screenshot taken 27 Jan 2014. This is just the beginning and we are very excited about this project. It is a very powerful feature in the online database. When you click on the word "Cemeteries," it brings you to this page. Here you can look at the location of interest or browse through the cemeteries.

More information is added every day to the Database. Members can view the Cemeteries and how they are associated with various people in the database. There are photos, stories, maps, and records. Members can see and also create/share headstone records and photos for individuals and the corresponding cemeteries.

Members can find headstones and people by browsing the list of cemeteries, which are organized by location or find them when looking at the individual record and clicking the convenient links.

The following is ONE EXAMPLE: By clicking on the County: "PEMBINA" from the screen above, another screen appears (see the example below). The screen first shows a map with the various cemeteries highlighted. You can zoom in to look at the individual areas or zoom out to see it in full view. Below the map, you will see the list of cemeteries. From this screen, you click on an individual cemetery to see more.

Photos, Headstones, Burial Information … so much to see. This is just the beginning and there is so much more. If you want access to this database, join as a member.

This database is from the life-work of Hálfdan Helgason in Iceland and now part of the non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization called Icelandic Roots. Hálfdan Helgason and Sunna Furstenau, along with other genealogists all across North America and Iceland, are adding names, places, and information to the database every day.

Members have full access to the database that now has almost 520,000 people. The new and powerful features such as the Cemetery Project, Headstones, Maps, Places, and photographs add a new and exciting dimension to this database.

From the Cemetery Page or the Individual Page, you can click on the links between the associated people, locations, and photos. When at the Vikur Cemetery, you see the Map, the Church, and Cemetery photos. When looking at an individual headstone, you can enlarge the photo and save it to your computer.
