Icelandic Roots, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is dedicated to preserving the rich tapestry of Icelandic heritage. With a mission rooted in education, we aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Iceland’s history, culture, language, and people—both in North America and across the globe.

Our genealogy team safeguards valuable records, stories, and photos so that the voices of past generations remain accessible. These resources empower individuals to explore their ancestry, embrace the Icelandic language, and immerse themselves in literature and traditions that bring the Icelandic story to life.

 

Community & Connection

Icelandic Roots is not only about history—it is also about people. Through projects such as Cousins Across the Ocean, we connect individuals across continents, strengthening bonds between Icelanders and those of Icelandic descent worldwide. Our community approach helps people discover family ties, share stories, and enjoy a sense of belonging, whether through cultural events, conversations, or collaborative projects.

Our Organization & Volunteers

Icelandic Roots is managed and fueled entirely by volunteers. Each person donates their time and skills to preserve heritage for future generations.

Membership fees and donations directly support our work and charitable activities. These include scholarships (such as the Snorri Scholarships and Icelandic Language Scholarships), cultural events, and grants that give back to Icelandic communities in North America and Iceland.
