Lögberg-Heimskringla Celebrates 140 Years
by Sharron Arksey
Lögberg-Heimskringla began as print copy in 1886 using the Icelandic language only. Despite enduring changes and challenges, its community continues to be informed and entertained. Congratulations and thank you to all for staying the course of "connecting past and present." (Quote taken from the front page banner of the Lögberg-Heimskringla website.)

On September 19, 2026, friends and supporters of Lögberg-Heimskringla (L-H) will gather in Winnipeg to celebrate the publication’s 140th anniversary.
The event, to be held at the city’s Scandinavian Centre, will feature the premiere of a
17-minute film entitled “A Modern Icelandic Saga: The Story of Lögberg-Heimskringla”.
More than a year in the making, the video takes a look at the newspaper’s longevity,
asking the question, “Why has this paper survived, when so many others have failed?”
The answer to that question, the film suggests, lies in the nature of the Icelandic
community it serves – its strength and endurance and its commitment to the written
word.

The Winnipeg event will be followed on October 16, 2026, by a second special viewing in Burnaby, B.C.
At the present time, the film is on a private YouTube channel with only its creators and certain L-H board members having access. But, once the two premieres are over, access will be granted to others.
Icelandic organizations across North America are invited to request access, perhaps with a view to holding special events of their own.
