On August 1, 2026, Icelandic Roots broke ground on Rootshús. Since then, construction has moved quickly, and the building is taking shape.

Rootshús is being built in Mountain, one of the oldest Icelandic settlement communities in North America, directly across from Víkur Church and Cemetery and on land homesteaded by Rev. Páll Þorláksson, the Father of the Icelandic Settlement in Dakota.

When it opens, it will be a living cultural and heritage center — a place to preserve our stories, explore the emigration experience, discover family connections, learn, gather, and welcome future generations.

In this webinar, we’ll share the latest construction progress and take you inside the plans for Rootshús. Learn about exciting elements of the project: the Emigration Trail, Saga Hall, Children’s Discovery area, Wild Iceland, rare books and archives, gathering spaces, and some of the technology and interactive experiences being developed.

We’ll also talk about what comes next as we move from construction into creating the exhibits, spaces, and experiences that will bring Rootshús to life.

The Rootshús Grand Opening is July 31, 2027.

Join this live public webinar on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM Pacific, 11:00 AM Mountain, 12:00 PM Central +DST, 1:00 PM Eastern, and 5:00 PM in Iceland.
